Project summary
Effective suicide prevention requires coordinated, multisectoral action that extends beyond health systems into communities. SURAKSHA is N-SPRITE's comprehensive community-based suicide prevention model, guided by the WHO's LIVE LIFE framework and India's National Suicide Prevention Strategy (2021).
Why strengthen communities
- Suicide is influenced by social, economic, and environmental factors that require systems-level responses.
- Early identification, community awareness, and timely support can prevent crises before they escalate.
- Responsible media reporting and reduced access to lethal means are proven population-level prevention strategies.
Focus
Community-level prevention, early identification, and coordinated response across a defined geography — starting with Channapatna taluk, Ramanagara district, Karnataka.
Seven integrated Work Packages
- WP1 — Community-Based Surveillance System (CBSS): identifies and tracks suicide and self-harm events at the community level.
- WP2 — Central Storage of Pesticides (CSP): restricts access to lethal means through safer storage practices.
- WP3 — Brief Interventions for Survivors of Self-Harm and Suicidality (BISS): timely psychosocial support to reduce risk of recurrence.
- WP4 — Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM): school-based mental health promotion, education, and intervention.
- WP5 — Training for Media Professionals: adherence to responsible reporting of suicide in the media.
- WP6 — Training for Police Personnel: awareness, gatekeeper training, and maintenance of self-harm registry in police records.
- WP7 — Information, Education, and Communication (IEC): community materials and digital campaigns to raise awareness and reduce stigma.
